Creating thumbnail imagery via PHP is a fairly straightforward task and there are many scripts and libraries out in the wild that accomplish it very well.

When recently asked to write one myself, I decided to try something a little different by utilising Apache's mod_rewite module to automatically generate a missing thumbnail file based on the requested filename.
